Too Much Screen Time!

I have to admit that through the last few years I have let the TV and computer creep so much into my and the kids lives, we practically don’t know what to do with ourselves! Over the last year I have especially struggled with my 4yo son who would throw raging tantrums every morning when I would tell him he needed to do his jobs and school before he could do anything else. Lately this has moved into a new problem. He will get up and immediately do his jobs (pick up the bathroom floors) and school (usually consists of “Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, memorizing poetry from “What Your Pre-Schooler Needs to Know” and a mix of math workbooks, handwriting and language books) and then he wants to play the computer for the rest of the day. I remember when my 14yo was 4. He played the computer a lot too. He learned to read on his own by playing it and now he designs his own video games. I can’t help but feel as if it is just too much though. Between the TV, the Wii and the computer, my kids seriously don’t do anything else with their freetime. How can I rid our home of the screen without causing WWIII at our house???

April 6, 2010 - 11:32 am Julia - Probably by causing WWIII & then finding peace again lol This is what we had to do with S - he discovered the Wii and it was like crack for that kid - I finally had to just get rid of it completley for a good month. It took a couple of weeks before he stopped asking for it everday & for his behavior to improve - it's sooo hard to find that balance when you have tv's, computers & gameing systems int he house, I can SO relate! It really is worth the misery though, of taking things away, waiting for them to "forget" and behviors to improve & then starting over again w/ strict rules (strict enough to create enjoyment when used but not addiction, but not strict enough that you hate your own system).
